Online news giant to launch UK edition with AOL Ariana Huffington is bringing popular online US News and Politics website 'The Huffington Post' to the UK. This comes as part of plans to expand and release several international spin-offs after its acquisition by AOL (NYSE:AOL)Launched in May 2005 as a simple alternative commentary outlet, the site has grown massively and led to AOL acquiring it for $315m (£195m) in February. Ms Huffington stated that The Huffington Post have been targeting to launch sites for France and Brazil. The UK site will have primarily British content, linking to further content on the original US site. The site offers coverage of politics, news, media, business, entertainment and world affairs from various news sources and authors. It has various local versions for the US including, HuffPost Chicago, HuffPost New York and HuffPost Los Angeles. It boasts nearly 940,000 followers on Twitter and has an online readership of millions worldwide. Contributors include a wide range of celebrities, politicians, academics and experts. People such as Barack Obama, Robert Redford, Hilary Clinton, Donatella Versace and Albert Brooks have all contributed to the site. AOL's chief executive, Tim Armstrong said of the subject of exanpansion, "The company may be big in the US, but the US only represents 4 per cent of the world’s population." "We will be looking to roll out HuffPost in other territories.” AOL recently announced the departure of over 900 staff as part of restructuring the HuffPost deal. Some journalists already working for AOL within the UK could now be asked to provide content for local editions of HuffPost, as well as possible new recruitment for the site.
